Together we can put the power of first aid into the next generations’ hands

Our first aid courses for primary and secondary school students gives them the skills and confidence to deal with a health emergency - wherever they are. Whether that’s at school, at home, or the park.

Delivered at your school by one of our friendly, first aid experts, our courses cover a range of first aid topics. Students will learn practical first aid techniques such as how to do CPR and treat a severe bleed. They’ll also learn how to deal with different first aid situations and how to look after someone until professional help arrives.

Meeting national curriculum requirements

Since 2020, all state-funded schools in England must teach first aid as part of health education for all Key Stages. All of our courses have been designed to meet these national curriculum requirements and are adapted for Key Stages 3, 4 and 5.

Why students should learn first aid

  • They could save a life – learning basic first aid could be the difference between a life saved and a life lost.
  • Builds their confidence – when they have the right knowledge and skills, young people can feel more confident to help in an emergency.
  • Wider impact on the community – if more people, of all ages, learned first aid then our communities will become safer and more resilient to everyday emergencies.
  • It’s fun! - our courses are delivered in a relaxed way with the opportunity to practise hands-on skills.

Support England’s first aid charity

We currently offer two courses - a free, one-hour session or a longer paid-for course. As a charity, we ask for a small contribution to cover our costs and resources for delivering our longer sessions.

By choosing St John Ambulance, you’ll be supporting our work to ensure that everyone receives the first aid that they need in an emergency. If you believe in the positive power of first aid, join us. Do it for future generations. For their friends and family. For you.

First aid for school students – course options

St John Ambulance provides all the equipment for the sessions. We do ask that you provide a suitable space with chairs, a table if there is one, and a whiteboard or screen. Please note that the courses are only available for schools in England.

If you have any questions or would like more information, please email us at community.education@sja.org.uk.
