Instagram (mobile only)

1. Go to the app and select the camera icon in the top left corner of the screen
2. Swipe the camera options at the bottom of the screen until you get to the LIVE option
3. Press the start button and your stream will begin.

Twitter (mobile only)

1. Open the Twitter app and select the quill icon, as if you were writing a new tweet
2. Click the camera icon
3. Select the LIVE camera option
4. You now have the option to add a description, location tag or invite a guest to go live with you
5. When you are ready, select ‘Go LIVE’.

Facebook (mobile app)

1. Open the Facebook app. Near the status bar, there is a LIVE button
2. Allow Facebook access to your camera and microphone if you haven’t done so already
3. At the top left of the screen it will say "To". This is where you can control who can see your live video, whether you want to limit it to friends or make it public
4. At the top right of the screen there are three dots. Select this for the option to add a donate button to your live stream for St John Ambulance. This means your audience can easily donate to us on your live stream without you having to set up a fundraising page on Just Giving or Give Penny
5. You can now edit the description, add a location tag and a filter
6. Click ‘Start Live Video’ to begin your live stream.

Facebook (desktop)

1. Visit the Facebook desktop site and select the status bar
2. Click on the ‘Live Video’ button
3. This will now take you to a Live Video Studio, where you can connect your camera and microphone, edit the video description and tag the game you are streaming
4. Once you are all connected, you will be given the option to ‘Go Live’.

JustGiving

1. Visit JustGiving and select the "sign up" button
2. You will be asked to enter your name, email address and to set a password
3. After setting up your page, select "Start Fundraising"
4. Select the option to give the money to a charity - this means we get the donations directly
5. Enter your home address to complete the sign up
6. Search for "St John Ambulance" and then select the first option
7. You will be asked what you are doing to raise the money. For livestreaming, select "Do Your Own Thing"
8. Fill out the information about your event by selecting "personal streaming / gaming event" in the drop-down box and then entering your event a name and date.
9. Once you have filled this out your page will be live. You can now add a picture and some extra information about the cause and the event.

Give Penny

1. Visit the Give Penny website and select the "Sign up" option
2. You can either sign up using your Facebook account or by setting up a new username and password. You will then be asked to add your address and a profile picture
3. Once you have completed the email verification you will be able to "Create Challenge"
4. Use the search bar to find St John Ambulance as your chosen charity
5. Select "Do my own thing"
6. Connect your Twitch account to this page
7. Give your challenge a name, date and website URL
8. Customise the page to include your donation target, story and Spotify playlist if you have one
9. Publish your page and start fundraising.

You can live stream almost anything that you think will be interesting for your audience. Here are a few examples:

• Gaming
• Online tutorials, e.g. yoga, knitting, baking, juggling, foreign language
• Quizzes
• Musical performance
• Charitable event, e.g. shaving your head, sitting in baked beans
• Challenge event, e.g. cycling the distance from London to Paris on your exercise bike
• Sweepstakes
• Bingo
• Create your own telethon.

There are lots of great streaming platforms to choose from. They range from going live on your social media, to setting up a Twitch account. Here are a few examples:

Stable internet or 4G connection is needed for your entire livestream.

If you are using your social media to live stream, all you will need is your smart phone or a laptop as these both have in-built cameras and microphones, it’s that simple.

If you plan on live streaming your gaming, or looking for a more professional video, you may need to have a microphone and higher quality webcam. You will also need to download streaming software, like an encoder, so that your footage looks crisper.

If you’re using a platform like YouTube, that has dedicated tools for livestreaming, you probably don’t need to use any other software. However, you might choose to use other software if:

• You want several people on your livestream, who will all be dialling in remotely
• You want overlays and extra content on your screen (i.e. not just your face!)
• You want to more features for your livestream
• You want to stream to several different platforms at the same time
• You want to do a more professional livestream

There are a lot of high quality streaming software available, and you should research which one might be best for the stream you’re planning. Here are three great options to get you started:

OBS (Open Broadcaster Software)

It’s free and plugs into a lot of the more popular platforms like YouTube, Mixer and Twitch. It runs on both Mac and Windows and has a really good support network. There are lots of YouTube how-to videos that you can use if you need help. However, OBS can be tricky to use for first-time streamers.

Streamlabs OBS

This free software is very similar to OBS, but a lot more user friendly. It is missing some of the functions that OBS has, but for a first-time streamer that wants a professional look, Streamlabs could be the one for you!

Streamyard

This is better for friends who want to do a live stream together from different locations. With this software you can stream with up to 10 friends at once! You also have the option to add banners and a few overlays too. Please note, if you use the free version, it will have a watermark in the corner.

Yes, but only if you want it to be. There are options on some streaming platforms to only broadcast to your friends or invited guests. This is also the case with Facebook LIVE.

By setting up a JustGiving page, a Give Penny page or a Tiltify account for St John Ambulance. You can encourage your viewers to donate money as they watch you. This could be in the form of a donation to attend the skill tutorial or as sponsorship for you dying your hair green. Whatever you decided to do on your live stream, you can encourage a small donation for watching.

You can do your live stream whenever you have time. It is best to decide a time and date that you know your audience can attend and then promote the live stream beforehand tin order to maximise your audience and donations.

• Tell as many people as you can what you plan to do and when it’s going to happen.
• Make sure you advertise on all your social media platforms, not just the platform you decide to stream from.
• Add hashtags to your social media posts to widen your audience to other people who may be interested in watching your live stream.
